Samantha,
or commonly known as Sam or Sammy is my 2 1/2 year old Border
Collie and Golden Retriever mix. My dad rescued Samantha when she was ten
weeks old. I was begging my dad for another dog, and I said I didn't care
what breed. So one day when my dad went out, he came across Sam at a house
just down our street. She wasn't being taken care of, she was scrawny and
she had the developing look of mange. My dad felt so sorry for her, so he
went and asked if he could take her into his care, and they agreed. My dad
drove up from work, came inside and told me that a puppy was waiting for
me in the car. So I ran out to find a weak, poor black puppy in the front
seat of the car, and my dad told me the whole story. I took her inside,
gave her a warm bath (some of her fur fell out because of mange), dried
her, fed her, and put her in the dog crate previously used for our other
dog Bailey, who sadly passed away a few years before Sammy came into my
life. Then she had instantly fallen into a peaceful nap, and I knew that
was the start of a brand new friendship.
She had mange for two months after that, which started going away after
treatment. She didn't look too good until she was completely healed, but I
didn't care what she looked like. I let her sleep in my lap and cuddled
her, which really started my bond with her. We became the best of friends.
Then a month before her first birthday, while we were gone she somehow
managed to get outside and under the fence, and ran out... then a car hit
her. She broke her left hip completely in half, which was terrible, but I
am also so glad she didn't get killed. The vet thought she would need
surgery, but decided to put a cast on first to see if it would heal by
itself before we tried it. She was amazingly healed in three weeks, and was
out playing again in four weeks.
That was all about two years and one year ago, and she has grown into a
beautiful, loving, sweet and smart girl. She knows all the basic commands,
and a few special tricks like Shake, Hug and Kiss. We're still working on
other fun tricks together. She loves playing, she visits the new puppies
down the street weekly, and she's so friendly with them. She would fetch
her Tennis ball forever if you had the time to throw it that long! She
loves running, doing some Agility and her favorite activity would have to
be hiking in the forest. I love going through the forest with her, and she
has a blast running around in the open area and fields, through the trees
and all. Her best friend is Dudley, a Dachshund/Pomeranian mix who lives
next door, who is much smaller than her! They get along really well.
I am so lucky that I have Sammy, and although Bailey's passing left a hole
in my heart she's managed to fill me with love and friendship, something
that can only be brought by a best friend... something that Bailey gave
me, and now something that Sam gives me. love. She's a true friend, and
we'll be together 'til the end, forever and always!
