It's
been about eight months since we had to put Rickie down but he was
the best dog anyone could ask for. Rickie was fourteen when he passed
away, but his life was full of excitement and joy. Rickie loved to lay in
the sun no matter how hot it was. When he was two, we found him at an
animal shelter and he picked us right away. When we took him home we
learned that he loves to be outside barking at birds and squirrels. Rickie
loved to sit on dad's lap for hours at a time, and then groan when he
would get up. Rickie loved to be outside even when it was snowing.
About three years ago we found out that he was a diabetic and needed
insulin shots two times a day. Minor thing to make you best friend feel
better. He was a very healthy dog even up to his last few days. Shortly
after we discovered his diabetes, we found that Rickie became blind, but
that didn't stop him from living the same way he used to. He still would
bark at birds and squirrels, or what he thought were birds and squirrels,
and walk around the yard looking for the right spot to sit or sunbathe. He
still enjoyed going for walks with mom and sister. It was amazing how a
blind dog could go on long walks. Rickie loved to lay in the most random
spots and when he became blind they were even more random. He loved to sit
on the back of the chair, still to this day we have no idea how he could
get up there and not fall off. He was an amazing dog with nothing but love
and dedication to give. He was truly man's best friend.
