My
name is Candice and this is my lovely and wonderful rescue Border
Collie named Princess. Before we got Princess I was doing research on many
different dog breeds, and I finally settled on wanting a Border Collie. We
went down to a local shelter on Valentine's Day in 2009. I loved all of
them, but Princess and I seemed to have a special bond right from the
start, the minute I laid eyes on her and she looked up at me with her big,
sad eyes. After petting her, playing with her and bonding with her we
filled out some papers and brought her home. She was three years old when
I got her. I trained her, played with her and spent almost all of my time
with her (and still do). She was very shy and seemed very uncertain about
people when we got her, but she overcame her fears and now loves attention
from people and many other dogs. She is still scared of severe weather,
loud noises and the Vacuum. She is also afraid of cats, she was even
scared of a little ten-week-old kitten, but hey, she's my little baby. We
are unsure about her start in life to have ended up in a shelter.
She is a very, very smart girl and knows over 30 tricks and commands. Her
first mastered trick was "sit." Her favorites to perform are "High Five",
"Go Hide" and "Jump." She is amazing at jumping up and loves to run and
hide in the nearest pile of toys for the Hide trick. She learned "High
Five" very quickly after mastering "Paw" and "Other Paw." She will do
pretty much any tricks and want to learn new tricks--especially if it
means she gets her treats! Her favorite things to do are play with her
Horseshoe toy, throwing it around and getting it around her nose. She Also
loves playing fetch with her Blue Tennis Ball. On walks she likes walking
along the beach that we live very close to. She stops to dig in the sand
or splash in the water. She also likes walking through the forest to chase
sticks, pick up sticks and sniff almost every tree we walk by. When we
come home she always likes sniffing the flowers at the front of the house.
On a typical rainy day or indoors day she likes to cuddle on her Tweety
Bird blanket or snuggle up with somebody on the sofa and watch TV.
She was very scared during Hurricane Irene sweeping through New Jersey.
She hid in the closet upstairs (where she always hides from things) and
wouldn't come out unless I was with her. She was scared because of the
very loud pounding rain on the windows and the sound of the strong winds
around the house. She was even more scared when we lost power, which was
when I had to be by her side all the time to get her to calm down. The
Hurricane started when I was out walking her, and she made a mad dash home
with me trailing behind, then ending up getting the front entrance wet
from shaking dry. She is the same with thunder storms, especially any time
extremely loud thunder and severely pounding rain happens. She is very
happy to now be back to mostly sunny days.
She brings unconditional love and happiness, and I named her Princess
because she is just that - my adorable Princess.
