This
is Anna, my very special rescued Greyhound. She went through a lot in
her past, and I am happy I found her. Anna retired from racing at the age
of four because she has a right shoulder injury and could no longer muster
the strength to run. Her "owner" then threw her out on the streets, seeing
as they were done with her when she could no longer run. Anna, then
helpless and alone she was getting weaker, could no longer move and had
crashed out on an abandoned blanket in the middle of a snowstorm. I used
to be a volunteer at a Greyhound Rescue, and one of the others volunteers
had come across her while outside the day after. She had brought Anna
back, and she was a mess. She was cold, shaking, and her right shoulder of
course looked terrible. She also had a hurt paw, and she seemed to be
unable to open her left eye. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw her
like that, it was heart-wrenching and just terrible. Anna had gone
straight to a vet, and in a miracle, they managed to fix her paw up, get
her eye open and OK and treat her injured shoulder. I was with her every
day until she could get up and moving again, and when she did, she was so
happy. Her shoulder hurt (and still does) for a little while from time to
time, but that didn't and still doesn't stop her.
Then about two weeks after, she was good to go and before I had the chance
to adopt her, someone else had stepped in. I knew she would be in good
hands though, but as it turns out I was wrong. Three months after, she was
brought back since the family decided due to working hours that they could
no longer take care of her. She was upset, and became scared to go near a
lot of people. I knew she was missing interaction with people, so I
decided to step in and bring her home with me, and that was just the start
of our friendship when she hopped in the front seat of the car and was
happily wagging her tail, it was a bit strange how she wasn't scared of me.
That was all about two years ago, and now Anna couldn't be happier. She's
an ex-racing Greyhound now, and I'm sure she's happy about it. She's more
on the shy side, and still scared of some people, but I love her either
way. She gets scared of lots of little noises, and I always pet her and
reassure her that she's all right. She's also very playful, she likes
hiking, playing with toys (her favorite is her duck), eating (of course!)
and snuggling beside me with her blanket. She's a real love-bug. On walks
she sniffs everything, runs in the flowers and enjoys life. But she hides
behind me when people approach until she knows I approve of them. She
knows many tricks like sit, stay, shake, circle, jump, hide and more.
She's very smart! She catches treats that I throw for her and plays with
pretty much anything. In the summer when the sprinkler is on, she's
running through it and drinking it up! I love Anna and I'm so glad she
survived and is with me!
