This
is Hawkeye, he's half Lab, and I think part German Shepherd and part
Greyhound. I adopted him from the animal shelter when he was ten weeks old,
and he has been my love and joy ever since! He love to hike, and get's
super-excited when he sees his packs come out of the closet! He has seventeen
Adirondack Mountains under his collar, in just two years!
When I first got Hawkeye, I was working on a farm, so he
grew-up around horses and pigs, and gets along well with all animals. From
day one, he has always had one eye on the sky, and is particularly curious
about jet streams, hence his name!
Hawkeye knows his basic voice command tricks: sit, down,
shake, stay. But he also knows them to body cues, and can do them at quite a
distance from me. He loves to go for car rides (back seat, of course) and
barks at large bridges.
I taught him to run alongside the bicycle with a nifty
little device called the "springer," which safely attaches him under my seat
via a giant spring. It's great for his exercise program, especially when we
can't make it to the mountains for hiking. This also prompted me to begin our
skijoring training. Hawkeye already knows left from right, and we're working
on "straight ahead."
Hawk is a pretty serious dog. He'll play with other dogs,
but he's kinda stuck-up and will only play for a little while. He doesn't
like the traditional game of fetch, but rather tug-of-war, especially when
you do all the tugging!
