Home: San Diego, California, USA

   Meet Max,

Our story is a simple one. Bella, our cat, was an only child. She was a Mama's girl who was antisocial with strangers. We thought she just might need a dog friend to help her come out of her shell a bit. We were open to all breeds and even considered getting a puppy!

Our good friends, Phil and Janet, are a devoted foster family for the Chihuahua Rescue of San Diego. At any given time, they are caring for a handful of random dogs, with every different kind of circumstance. We happened to meet Max, a four-year-old Chihuahua mix, at their home one evening and we were intrigued. Max stood out from the rest... to both of us. It was obvious that Max was trained and well behaved. He was almost showing off a bit as if to say "I am a great dog. Pick me and take me home. I promise to be a good boy."

A couple of weeks later, Phil and Janet came over for dinner and brought Max along. We weren't sure how Bella would respond. It was an experiment to say the least. Well, guess what? Max completely stayed out of Bella's way; he had the perfect temperament and just left her alone. But the big surprise was that our antisocial Miss Bella was captivated by Max! Who was this little dog who was ignoring her? Just for fun, we decided to let Max spend the night with us. To our surprise, Max seemed to be the perfect dog! Right away, we perceived him to be an old soul, with depth and dimension, and he seemed to talk with his eyes. We were definitely charmed by how utterly sweet, innocent, and affectionate he was.

Needless to say, Max never left. It's now one year later and Max and Bella are best friends! They chase each other around the house and my heart smiles every single time I see them playing together! Sometimes, Max will just be minding his own business and Bella will stalk him; he cruises by and all of a sudden, she'll pounce on him and then it's on - play time! It cracks me up. The addition of Max has been a profound experience for us as a family; his loving, playful, sincere spirit has changed us as people and uh, as cats too! Bella is so obviously happier and more friendly to people and animals alike; the transformation is pure magic. No one would have imagined that this little dog possessed the power to bring out the best in all of us. Our lives are forever richer because of him. And he wants nothing more than to be loved.

When Max isn't lying on my lap, he's usually fetching one of his many toys... his favorite thing to do. When he runs to his toy box to pick just the right one, your heart is pulled into this little guy. You can't help but fall in love with him. He walks extremely well on a leash; he's all about going for evening strolls in our neighborhood. He's never had even one accident in the house. Max is perfectly healthy and active. We are so lucky!

In many ways, Max adopted us. I have no idea how anybody could have given Max up, but I'm so glad that he's ours now. At the end of a long day, we always have something to look forward to - our little Max waiting anxiously to greet us. He is always so happy to see us and he loves us unconditionally. It's hard to imagine a life without him. We have a true bond and a loving, loyal, lifelong companionship.

Max is a very special little boy!
