Soldier
is my first dog, and a very special boy. I found him as a
so-called stray, wandering the streets with an injured paw, dirty fur and
one deep look of sadness and fear. I walked up to him, he looked up
seeming scared but allowed to to pick him up. I immediately brought him to
the Animal Rescue League in Boston, since I was closest to there at the
time. They took him in and managed to treat his fur and help his injured
paw. He was very timid, but so gentle, knowing that people were trying to
help him. After a few days, I went back to see how he was doing since they
kept him there to make sure he was doing fine before finding a new home.
They said he was doing fine after a vet looked at him, and he was happy
playing with some other dogs and puppies there. I stayed for a while and
spent some time with him, he was very sweet, gentle and just so social
considering the state he was in when I found him.
After about a week or so, they said he was ready to find a new home and I
was the first to volunteer. He was just the perfect dog and we formed a
bond from the minute I saw him. So I ended up bringing him home with me.
He was still timid with using his paw that was injured, and he was also a
little afraid of going to a new home with people. But after a while he
became the best dog I could ever hope for. He is completely okay with his
paw now, and is as active as ever, it being Three years later. When I took
him to the shelter they approximated his age to be about a year old, and
his breed cross to be a Samoyed/Tibetan Terrier and Whippet. He is a very
loving and affectionate boy. He enjoys running in the yard with his Tennis
Ball, ripping flowers apart (which I'm trying to get him to stop doing)
basking in the sun from "his chair" on the front porch and hanging around
with our cat, Jessica. Jessica's new, most recent hiding spot from Soldier
is on top of the Fridge, where he will bark trying to get her to come down
until he gets tired of trying.
He will sit and watch a movie with me some nights, and cuddle up in his
spot on the sofa, usually falling asleep with his head shoved half in the
cushion. Or when he sleeps on my bed I wake up to find him half on my head
and half on the pillow beside me. He is very smart, knowing tons of tricks
and basic commands like "sit", "shake" and "spin." He is an amazing
catcher, when he does those tricks he makes a run for the treats that I
throw and catches them in mid-air. He even caught one from me throwing it
off the balcony to him all the way below before!
We named him Soldier because that's simply what he is, my brave little
Soldier boy. And it suits him for sure. He is the best dog I could have
ever hoped for.
