This
is Angelo, a Border Collie who is about five and a half years old. He
and I live in southern Colorado in a green and off-grid home.
Angelo showed up at my door the day after my previous dog had been killed
in a hit and run accident. He's been with me ever since. Well, except for
five and a half weeks when he disappeared. He's even written a book about
that, called Angelo's Journey.
How many author dogs do you know?
Angelo is astonishingly smart and sensitive. The day after I buried my
previous dog, Angelo ran all over our five acres and retrieved all of her
toys and deposited them on her grave. He's also very protective of the
chickens, keeping coyotes and other predators away from them. That may be
because he and I lived with a baby chick in a ten by ten foot shed the
first winter we lived out here. He kept me from freezing to death on those
arctic Colorado winter nights.
Now, Angelo has a little black Lab sister named Maggie, so he has a friend
to play with and to herd when she gets out of line.
Angelo also herds the deer that we have around here. He'll see them in the
distance, get annoyed at their disarray, and round 'em up till they're
contained in a circle, when he runs around them and keeps everybody organized.
