Fido,
better known as Fi, is the most empathetic dog I've ever owned, and my
previous dog was a Golden Retriever - no slouch in the empathy department. He
is incapable of not being adorable and is a show-stopper wherever we go. As a
widower, he is my constant companion and my best buddy. After eight years
together we have developed that extraordinary intimacy that develops when
you've lived with a dog a long time - we know each other's moves and moods
and almost live together as one person. He has his special places in each
room of my home since he doesn't like being out of line of sight of me, and
his facial expressions at walk time or feeding time are superb acts of
artistry. He snuggles against my back at bed time and that little pocket of
warmth is better than any sleeping pill on the market. He loves people but
has no particular interest in other dogs although he loves to chase rabbits
which is hilarious to watch. He's not particularly well trained (he is, of
course, house broken and leash trained) and doesn't sit or stay or roll over
or any of those things that don't let dogs be dogs - at fifteen pounds it's
hardly necessary. In all our time together, I've only heard him bark twice.
He is simply the most beautiful, empathetic, cuddliest, adorable, sweetest
dog I've ever owned. I can't imagine life without him.
