Hello,
I would like to nominate our dog Abbie. We got her as a puppy for our
then eleven year old granddaughter after her dog was hit and killed by a car,
but she didn't give Abbie much attention so she became our dog. My husband
wasn't very interested in Abbie at first and immediately said we're not having
a dog in the house (famous last words). Little Abbie went from outside dog
lot to garage to laundry room to kitchen, and finally to full run of the
house and her biggest fan is my husband and vice versa. She even sleeps in
his chair.
Abbie's two favorite activities involve vehicles and being outside. She loves
to ride in his truck and on the Mule, a four-wheel utility vehicle. When he
starts the truck or Mule, there is Abbie ready to go with him in the truck or
eager to hop on the Mule to go check the beef cows in the pasture. If she
cannot go, she cries, howls and paces the floor and also sits on the back of
couch watching and waiting for his return (see photo). She is not a happy
camper if he goes without her and I get to listen to her pitiful crying.
Being outside often and sometimes running in the cow pasture (in addition to
riding the Mule) makes for a stinky dog. I am the lucky one who gets the
honor of bathing, feeding, and taking her to vet. Bathing her is a game of
strategy because she does not like it. I have to disguise or hide the shampoo
but eventually I get her bathed and cleaned up and smelling good... until the
next time.
She doesn't do tricks as such. She is an energetic dog and really enjoys
being outside running and playing and checking on everything. She is also a
good little housedog and when she's inside, she is very calm and has never
caused any damage to anything. She likes to be near us and will sit in the
chair with me or my husband. If I'm working at my desk, she will lay under
it to be near me. Usually she's ready to nap after a hard day of activity
outside. One of her favorite treats is a Slim Jim which she gets when she
visits a local country store where she is always welcomed. If she isn't with
my husband, the people always ask "where's Abbie?" before greeting him!
She is also welcomed at local banks where she is always given a doggy treat.
Abbie is really a sweet dog and loves all of us and we love her. We are glad
she is a member of our family and she is special to us every day.
