My
pet's name is Phyllis, a.k.a. Pecan Standy because she loves to jump on me
when I come home after work. Phyllis is a shar-pei and is about three
years old. I adopted Phyllis from an animal shelter in July, 2009. She had
lived there - bouncing from one branch to another - for over a year. She
had spent her entire life in a puppy mill before that; she was rescued
from one of the worst puppy mills on record in St. Louis (and there are
lots of them!). Needless to say, we had a bit of an adjustment period.
Because of years of neglect, Phyllis' ears, eyes, toes, and skin are all
in need of repair. But she is coming into her own. I give her eye drops
and fish oil daily, and am seeing improvement almost every day.
It's hard to believe that it's only been seven months since she came into
my life. With every day that passes, she seems to take on more and more
dog like behaviors: one day she will start chewing on the bone I bought
for her six months ago, the next day she will bark at strangers, the day
after she will sleep on the mattress I bought for her, etc. And her tail
never stops wagging. It brings tears to my eyes to write these words.
Although I brought her home one day last summer, it may have been Phyllis
who has rescued me... And that is why she is my special dog, and I am
glad to be her dad.
