Lucy
is a one year old Boxer/Rhodesian Ridgeback mix. She holds true to both
of those breeds. She has the energy level of a Boxer with the endurance of a
Ridgeback. She has had a rough ride along this crazy trip called life, but she
still comes out with her tail-a-waggin'.
When we adopted Lucy in November of 2008 from a local shelter, she was a
happy-go-lucky puppy who was calm, wanted to be cuddled at all times, and
slept constantly. In the three short months before we had her, Lucy was born
in a shelter, and had been adopted by two separate people, both returning
her. Upon taking her home, we realized she didn't eat and drink the normal
quantities that puppies do. On Black Friday we took Lucy to get her
first check-up. It was there that we discovered our precious little girl had
Parvo. Parvo is a life-threatening disease that usually puppies and
unvaccinated dogs get. After receiving the news about the cost that would come
along with it, my heart stopped. We had owned her for less than a week, and
the vet gave us two options; give her treatment between $1,200-2,500 or put
her to sleep. Against my dad's wishes, I went for the treatment. Being a poor
college student, I obviously didn't have the money at the time. (I soon picked
up a second job!)
Lucy was fully treated within three days. When the veterinarian called me to
pick her up, she warned me she'd be a different dog than we had known. Boy was
she different! Lucy who was calm, cuddly, and tired all the time was now
bouncing off the walls, jumping on my lap and wanting to play. This was a
completely different dog! The fluid treatment that Lucy was given has left her
with 'angel wings', the vet said she's never seen anything like it but the
fluid treatment dyed her coat a lighter color, leaving her with two 'wings' on
her back. Sometimes when we call her Lucipher, we debate on whether they're
really devil horns in disguise.
Walks, treats, obedience classes, and dog parks are a few of Lucy's favorite
things! She may hate her gentle leader, but she loves going for long walks.
She loves obedience class and always puts on an act while there. She loves her
treats and will do just about anything for them. Lucy is a social butterfly.
She has never showed any aggression, but does like to play pretty rough. She
destroys toys (especially those squeaky ones!), she loves rawhides, and her
all time favorite game is fetch. She is our crazy little goofball.
Being the social butterfly that she is, Lucy has many friends. She is like
that annoying hyper kid at the park - for the first half an hour they're fun
to play with, but after a while they're a bit much to handle. That's our Lucy.
She has no problem making friends, keeping them is the issue!. Her best
friends are Prince, Chloe, Clyde, Tucker, and her best gal pal Roxy. She loves
children and is aware of when she's supposed to calm down. The children in our
neighborhood always come to our door and ask if Lucy can come out and play
because she loves soccer.
Lucy is a lot of hard work, takes a lot of time, and costs me lots of money.
But we wouldn't trade her for the world. She has the kindest heart we've ever
seen, and continues to brighten our day with each one we get to spend with
her. Lucy goes to show that no matter what challenges life throws you, you
gotta keep your spirits up, and your tail-a-waggin'.
