Mali, the Dog of the Day
Name: Mali
Age: Seven years old
Gender: Female Breed: Shetland Sheepdog
Home: Southaven, Mississippi, USA

Mali is a very special girl and for us, her parents, only the smartest and prettiest girl in the world. When she was only about eight weeks old she was completely house broken. The day after we brought her home there was a downpour and her mother took her out about every ten to fifteen minutes. She grasped the idea of the outside quickly but it also made her into the biggest tomboy in history. Now if it is raining she seeks out the biggest mud puddle in the yard.

She sleeps with us up on the select comfort bed with us and her number fluctuates between 80 and 60. You see Mali does not sleep north to south in the middle she takes up her half by going east west. Suzy and I have to hang on the edge because of it. We don't mind, in fact we joke that she allows us to sleep on her bed.

Mali has begun to watch television and has her own critique of what she sees. One commercial she hates is the female cartoon character from Essurance. She also likes Westminster Dog Show. Every once in a while there are search lights that flash across the sky that Mali can see at night. When that happens she chases it and barks to say you stay out of my yard. Mali and I play the same game on a smaller scale with the flashlight.

She is also a fabulous Frisbee catcher. She picked this up on her own one day. I threw the Frisbee just to see what would happen. Mali chased it down and caught it in a mid air jump. Since that day she is always ready for a game.

As you can see Mali is a blue merle Sheltie, so we often get the question, "Is she an Australian Shepherd?" No, she's a true Sheltie with all the attributes that the breed is famous for (maybe infamous for?). She's a talker, she's loyal like nobody's business, loves to play, and does the best Sheltie spins.

Mali has a brother, Cooper, that we adopted from Fresh Start Sheltie Rescue and a brother, William, that we adopted from a shelter. Cooper is also a (big) Sheltie who is every bit as lovable as his sister is and they get along... most of the time. William is a big, beautiful Maine Coon cat who is ten years old. He and Mali have been together since she was a baby and he loves to groom her face. She likes" to "groom" him back but she just puts a knot into his beautiful hair and we have to cut it out.

She does have one attribute that I'm not sure is a Sheltie trait but maybe just a Mali trait. You see she is a "French Fry Thief" - ok, she did it once but if her Daddy hadn't given her away I never would have known. I was sitting on the couch eating a burger and fries while my husband was in the kitchen. All of a sudden he burst into laughter and I'm wondering what's going on. He told me that Mali had come from the other end of the couch, had stolen a fry off the plate, and eaten it on her way back to her end of the couch. I immediately looked in her direction and she was so innocently looking at me as if to say, "What, Mommy, I've done nothing." And, the thing of it was, she did look so very innocent.

She is also a great protector from other kids. I have a full length mirror and one day she spotted herself in it and boy did she give herself heck. She barked and barked at herself and then was growling. She was really protecting us from that pretty little girl. I wonder if she thought, "Hey, that looks like me?" LOL!

Mali - the Welsh spelling of Molly - is one of the sweetest baby girls anyone could ever have! She is silly and funny, too. She adds so very much to our lives. Of course, you can see for yourselves that she is an absolutely beautiful girl. We feel so very blessed to have her in our lives and are thankful each day for her and her big heart!!! She is funny, free-spirited and we count ourselves as lucky to be her parents.
