Our
grand-dog, Birdie, is a five-year-old Shepherd/Lab mix. She is currently
living with my husband and I in Parkville, Missouri while our son is
deployed with the Army in Afghanistan. She also lived with us in '06-'07
when he was deployed to Iraq, so our home has been her home for a
significant part of her life.
Birdie is the most expressive dog we have ever seen. When she looks at us
with her large brown, soulful, eyes, you are sure she is about to talk to
you. Then when she puts her paw up over your arm or comes up and nudges
your hand with her head, you know she is asking for your undivided
attention! She is especially attentive when food is nearby, but the best
she can hope for in people food is to lick the plate.
One of her favorite activities at our house is watching for deer or the
neighbor's cat in our heavily wooded back yard. If she sees the cat or
deer (one, two or even six at one time!), she charges at the window and
barks ferociously (as ferociously as Birdie can bark) at the intruders.
She's much braver from afar than if she actually was face-to-face with
them.
At 60+ pounds, Birdie is hardly a lap dog, but that doesn't stop her from
trying! She will jump up on the sofa and back her way right onto your lap.
She also loves to lay on the bed, but always politely waits for an
invitation before bounding up!
Besides Missouri, Birdie has also lived in Hawaii and Kentucky. She is a
very laid back, adaptable pet. I flew with her to Hawaii, and even after
12+ hours in her crate, she came out just as happy as ever. She can be
trusted to never make a mess in the house, and gets along well with all the
other pets in our home. She is a bit of a "fraidy dog," however. As far
as being a "watch-dog" - well, we say she would definitely watch anyone
come into our home, and probably would even go up to greet them!
Birdie is just the best dog I have ever been around. When it comes time
for her to leave again, I will be sad and the house will be a bit lonely.
That being said, I cannot wait for the day when our son comes home from
Afghanistan! And Birdie will be at the airport to greet him!
