I
was rescued from the streets of Bucharest, Romania, along with my mother
and siblings by some kind folks at Romanian Animal Rescue. My new mom was
working in the country temporarily and fell in love the moment she met me
at a fundraising event, and adopted me to bring me from the dirty,
dangerous streets of Romania to a life of bliss in a remote town on the
shore of Lake Superior in Michigan.
Weighing only about twenty pounds when Ursu came to the USA, he soon realized
he could have wonderful food instead of what was found on the streets and
grew to about 110 pounds now. Although he was a rescue, we think he
resembles the Carpathian Sheepdog, sturdy dogs bred in the Carpathian
Mountains in Romania, with a very thick coat, well-suited to the climate
here in Upper Michigan. He loves to be outside and play in the snow.
In one photo, he is wearing a t-shirt because he was a mascot at a
fundraiser, and certainly drew a lot of attention to our cause and
patiently visited with each child who wanted to come and pet him. He became
so popular, he even started (with some help), his own
Facebook page.
Just look for "Ursu."
Ursu, which means "bear" in Romanian, is one of the most intelligent,
affectionate dogs we have ever had the privilege to know. As a puppy, he
had a bad habit of getting into things and chewing them, including a book
called "A Dangerous Book For Dogs," which convinced us he had not only
learned English, he had learned to read and understand. :) The other
photo is during a spring day when the snow was melting, but he loves the
snow and continued to find patches of snow to lie on until they were all gone.
When Ursu first arrived, he came home to two elderly dogs, who died within
the first year of his arrival. He seemed very depressed to be an
"only-dog," so we found a sister for him, who was in danger of being
euthanized at our local shelter since she had been there so long. Cena is a
two year old Viszla mix, and after a few tentative days, they became very
close friends.
After thinking we would go without dogs once our two old ones passed on, it
seems life took a different course, and we could not be happier to have
Ursu (and Cena) in our lives.
