Spike, the Dog of the Day
Name: Spike
Age: Six years old
Gender: Male Breed: Great Dane, Border Collie
Home: Olympia, Washington, USA

Spike is the best dog. I got him when he was three years old, from the Humane Society. I went to the Humane Society with my friend, not looking for a dog. My friend wanted to look at the cats and I decided to walk to the dog section. He was in the first kennel and it was love at first sight. I knew I had to take him home, so I did. We have been through so much together and he is a "million dollar" dog. We had a rocky start at first. He had a serious skin problem, which was why his old owner had to give him up, she couldn't afford the expensive medication anymore. After trying different medications, I decided to try a diet change. I switched him to the raw diet and he immediately improved. The itching stopped and his fur grew back on his rump/legs and was very smooth, soft and glossy. Then I went on vacation and had someone watch him. That person's tenants, who were just evicted, got angry and decided to take it out on Spike. He was stabbed in the back. He had to have surgery but came out okay. He sure clung to my side for a few weeks after the surgery and would throw a fit whenever I left his sight. He healed just fine and the scar is barely visible. He's been through a lot.

Spike now lives with me on four acres in Olympia. He is so good with animals, he loves cats. He's good with the chickens and even herds the goats for us from time to time. He whines whenever we have a new rabbit litter in the nest box, he loves to nuzzle with the kits. He also learns very quickly, it usually takes him a day or two to learn a new trick. He is a very vocal dog. He growls constantly but it isn't the vicious kind of growling, more of like a grumbling noise, we call it his "love growl".

One last thing about him. He smiles. He shows his teeth when I rub his belly, it looks like he is smiling.

He truly is the best dog and I love him to pieces. He's going to stay with us for the rest of his life, no matter what.
