This
is Lucy. She weighs about fifteen pounds and makes it a point to love
everyone she meets. Her tongue does most of the work. This is her clown suit.
Lucy is a "pound puppy." We got her from the SPCA in Santa Cruz about two
years ago. We live in Capitola. My wife, Miki and I were standing in the
front room and somebody let all the little dogs out. All of a sudden we were
swimming in little terriers, Chihuahuas and Lucy. Lucy wasted no time, she
went right to Miki and started jumping, trying to get picked up. It worked!
All of a sudden it didn't seem like there were any other dogs in the room and
Miki picked her up. Lucy had picked us and was coming home.
Nobody has a clue what breed of dog she is and they think she is about three
years old now. I think the name they gave her breed was "Heinz 57." Miki
insists that there must be some "chicken" in there somewhere because when you
walk behind her, her legs look like little drumsticks.
Lucy is now what they call a registered "Service Dog." She gets to ride in
the cart at the Supermarket. She loves it because she, more than anything
else, loves to lick babies. The mothers don't seem to mind, she is always
well groomed. Miki takes showers with her and Lucy doesn't mind getting her
own sink bath.
She became a "Service Dog" so she could go over to the apartments close to us
and visit with older folks that can't have a dog. There is this one in
particular that has an electric wheel chair. She can't walk or speak due to a
stroke. But when I lift Lucy up to her face so Lucy can kiss her, the woman
gets this amazing smile on her face and starts to laugh as best she can. Lucy
never asks for a treat, she just loves to make folks happy.
She's an amazing little soul inside the cutest little body ever.
