Rags
is not your typical greyhound. He's not shy at all; is super playful
and loves to wrestle and run at the dog park. Rags isn't a jump-on-the-couch
and cuddle boy, but he does love to have his ears and neck rubbed. He's
brought us more joy than we could ever have hoped for.
Rags has the most playful personality of any greyhound I've ever encountered;
in fact, people often ask if he's a mixed breed because his behavior is much
more that of, say a golden lab puppy than an adult greyhound. We tell them he
doesn't know he's a greyhound (or that he's not a still a puppy). He bounds,
he bounces, he wrestles and constantly assumes the "play stance" with other dogs
(here's a picture of him doing that with my sister's Bichon, Harvey). He
likes to tease the other dogs by grabbing their ball or toy and then making
them chase him; unfortunately most of them have figured out that they can
never catch him! In the winter, aside from playing, one of Rags's favorite
pastimes is lying on his bed by the fire. In the summer it's just a change of
scenery as he lies on the lawn. Rags is a smart boy who knows how to sit,
lie, shake hands (both paws) and jump for treats. The only command he hasn't
quite mastered is "stay" because he often acts like he's my shadow. He also
likes to munch ice cubes and play with squeaky toys. When he wants attention
he will rub up and down the side of the bed or stamp his front paw and bark
till you pet him. I've never seen a dog stamp his paw before and it's
hilarious when he does.
