I
first met Sparky when he was only a couple of weeks old, and fell in love
with him. At three months old, I decided that he needed to come home with me.
Since I already had a very possessive three-year-old Pom (Myndi) at home, I
wasn't sure that it would work out, so I brought him home on an overnight
trial basis. After all of fifteen minutes of growling and snarling on Myndi's
part, and establishing her role as Alpha dog, they were off running and
playing together, so Sparky now had a furever home with us.
Everyone thinks that Sparky is a purebred Shih Tzu, but his mother was a
white Pom and daddy was a tan and white Shih tzu, so he got Dad's looks, for
sure. This was not a planned litter by the breeder (both reputable and
local), since somehow Mom and Dad got together on the sly!
He has the most sweet and gentle temperament of any dog I have ever had, and
he thinks that people were put on Earth for the sole purpose of playing with
him. He's my pillow-pup, and can be found chillin' out during the day on any
available pillow not in use. He loves to play outside when the weather is
nice, and to nose around checking out every smell, and to look for any signs
of life at the neighbor's house, so he can bark and let them know he is on
guard and protecting his home turf. In spite of that tough guy image he likes
to portray at times, he's nothing more than a mushy Mommy's boy. Over the
past several years he has developed a fear of thunderstorms, and has to be on
my lap, or snuggled up next to me under the covers if we're in bed. He loves
to eat, and a couple of his favorite special snacks are pizza crust and
fortune cookies, but he's only allowed these on special occasions.
He's not one that plays with toys much, but he loves to act silly and goofy.
When one of these moods strikes, he races and tears around the house like a
crazy man. The more I laugh at him when he does this - the more he does it -
and he keeps it up till he is exhausted. I always ask him where he got the
loco-weed, but he's not telling.
All in all, he is just a great little companion. He and Myndi both have been
great company and healing therapy for me in the past several years when I had
been recovering from several surgeries and unable to go anywhere on my own. I
wouldn't trade this special little guy for anything - and he's my Dog of the Day - every day.
