This
is our big sweetheart Kayla. We adopted Kayla from a shelter when she was
around 1 1/2 years old. We had just lost our German Shepard, Brownie to old age
after eleven years. Our house was empty and we had a hole to fill. Kayla was
just the dog to fill the emptiness.
As a young dog she was extremely agile for her size (85 pounds) and loved to play
and rough house with us. She did come with some issues and had fear of things
over her head. When frightened she would go into a crouch and take off, we
called it Commando Mode (CM). She was so strong and if we were walking and she
went into CM unexpectedly it was all I could do to hold on for the ride until I
could get her attention.
Kayla does not have a mean bone in her body and loves everybody she encounters
whether a small child or a big burly man. She is a chow hound and next to
people, food is her number one priority. She knows when dinner time approaches
and starts asking for it 60 to 90 minutes ahead of schedule.
Kayla also loved playing with her little sister Alli, a terrier mix who we got
when Kayla was four or so. Alli quickly took the alpha role and Kayla didn't care
at all. She would fend off Alli's playful attacks and when finally tired, she
would put Alli in her place, firmly but nicely. Their bond is strong and Kayla
is the only dog Alli will allow to play with her still to this day.
Kayla has slowed now and we allow her to do as she pleases as she has earned her
retirement. She still loves her walks, albeit not as long, and spends most of
the day sleeping or prompting us for treats. She still craves attention and will
attempt to play with Alli but can't begin to keep up with her anymore.
Kayla has given so much love and joy to us and she will always hold a special
place in our hearts. Just thinking of her brings a smile to my face...
