Kayla
has been in our home for about twenty months. She came to us from a
Weimaraner rescue in Oxford, MA. Prior to being adopted she spent
approximately two months there. Since last spring, she has made her mark
on the cape beaches and dog park in Harwich.
Kayla loves to swim on the warm summer days, and by swim, I don't mean
fetch. She will just walk out into the water and swim up and down the
shore. She also likes to dig for shells, and "rescue" them while at the
beach. I say "rescue" because she takes them from the sand and puts
them back into the water. She loves to go for boat rides and jump from
the boat into the water. She can run for hours and never seems to get
tired until she is home and can crawl into her bed. She and her brother
(a two year old weim) are just about inseparable. They share the same
chair when taking a nap and love to play together. She learned how to
play dead for the "talent show" the last day of basic obedience
training. She is very smart and learns new tricks quickly. She knows
to ring the bells on the door whenever she needs to go outside and she
even closes the cabinet drawers after helping her to whatever human food
is inside them (the latter has prompted the child locks to be put on the
cabinets). She has the typical weim hunting drive and chases cats out
of the backyard, while her brother tries to get the squirrels. I always
joke that we need to move to a warmer climate, because she loves to sun
bathe.
When I first got Kayla she was wary of men. But, she absolutely adores
her human grandpa and when he comes by to play she is his shadow. She
also loves to sit with her human dad on the couch. But like any dog, or
at least dog that thinks they're a human, she loves her independence and
loves to explore new things. Our backyard abuts conservation lands and
she has been known to take herself for walks there. Since she has been
going to school (a.k.a. doggie daycare) her social skills have improved
and she has a lot of fun playing with her friends there. I have been
told that she is a great mom-figure to the two puppy weims that just
started attending and also that she has a great dane boyfriend.
But, if I had to describe her personality in one word it would be
determined. She knows that she has to sit by the kitchen door if she
wants to get fed, and most days I notice that I haven't seen her in a
little while and I'll find her sitting by the kitchen door staring at
the dog food cabinet. If her brother is in her favorite seat she won't
stop trying to pay tricks on him until he gets up and she quickly runs
back to "her spot". But, best of all, she can't be crated because she
knows how to get out. After being crated when having a sleep over at
daycare, they found her in the morning sleeping on the couch in the
office. She not only escaped from the crate, but chewed off the
doorknob to the room she was sleeping in (and left it in a pile on the
floor).
