Idgie
was the fulfillment of a twenty-year promise made by grandmother.
When I was five, I fell in love with a pug puppy at a pet store. My
grandmother wisely refused to buy a pet-store puppy, but she promised me
that she would buy me one when I was old enough to have a home of my
own. Twenty years later, she bought Idgie as a wedding gift for my
husband and I. Just a year after we were married, my grandmother died,
so Idgie is a very special reminder of her. Idgie was named after a
character from the novel Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe,
and she's just as spunky and determined as her namesake. She loves food
and will do just about anything for a treat. She also loves attention,
even the negative kind, and will run through the house with any socks
she finds on the floor so that we will chase her for them. She may be
little, but when Idgie decides she doesn't want to go somewhere, she
will sit down and yank her head backward against the leash. No amount of
tugging or cajoling will convince her to come with you if she doesn't
want to. Idgie has filled our lives with laughter at her antics. She
can do a lot of tricks and enjoys posing for the camera. Even when she's
bad, she's just so cute that we can't stay angry for long. She also can
be very cuddly and sweet, and she especially enjoys giving us kisses
when we come home from work. We can't imagine life without her!
