Riley, the Dog of the Day
Name: Riley
Age: Three years old
Gender: Female Breed: Rhodesian Ridgeback
Home: Suwanee, Georgia, USA

Riley is the sweetest dog. She loves my eighteen-month-old son, Christian. They are best friends. They play together all of the time. Riley's favorite game is when Christian takes his flashlight and shines it everywhere. Riley chases it and thinks it is a squirrel or chipmunk. Riley loves to run, run and run. We live very close to the Atlanta Falcons old training facility in Suwanee, Georgia and we take Riley to the vacated football fields as much as possible and she has a ball. It is dog heaven. Riley runs and never stops running.

Riley likes to make Christian laugh. When Christian is playing on the bed, Riley will run into the room and jump on the bed, then jump off and run out of the room. Christian laughs and laughs and laughs. She will do this over and over again just to make Christian laugh. Fetch is Riley's other favorite game. She will chase down every ball that Christian throws and will bring it right back to him. Riley is the best dog in the world. I have also written a poem about Riley.

   My Rhodesian Ridgeback Riley

I often wonder what passes through Riley's mind ...
Probably, a thought or two of a bone to find.

She prances about, covering all of the field...
From one spot to another, she will never yield.

Searching in all places on the left and the right...
Riley will explore all of the day and the night.

Her current mission is to locate a play toy...
A ball, a stick, a new treat will bring awesome joy.

Quickly distracted by a squirrel in a pine tree...
She pauses, poses and shows her true pedigree.

The hunt is on...Riley's ancestors would be pleased...
Stalking a prey on a trail through bushes and leaves.

Her bloodline features mountain lion hunts of lore...
Does Riley have these instincts entrenched in her core?

She pursues the prey squirrel, with an anxious attack...
Clumsy and awkward, she makes her presence a fact.

The squirrel finds an escape in a tree up above...
Although no success, Riley discovers her love.

The hunt, the chase, the ambition of a Ridgeback...
Another day Riley may attempt a comeback.

When I watch her prowl, she displays wonderful poise...
But Riley forgets that her dog collar makes noise.
