This
is Seaberdale of Charlemagne - Charlie. He is a Sealyham Terrier
[from Wales], but now lives Metairie, Louisiana. At the age of seven months,
this dog saved the house and lives of this family when he alerted us of
a blazing fire in our home at 1:30 in the morning. The Sealyham breed is
known for being the clowns [and the couch potatoes] of the terrier
world. The neighbors actually look for us on our walks and come out to
see Charlie who immediately rolls over for the tummy rub. He plays with
the cats and thinks his tennis balls are out to get him. His favorite
toys make noise and have a rope on them so that he can 'tease us' by
keeping it an inch out of our grasp. We think the only reason he tries
to chase cars [securely leashed] is that he thinks there is somebody in
there who needs to be played with.
The Sealyham was bred in Wales as a badger and otter hunter. Teams of
men would follow them with shovels to dig the mud away from the dog when
he started to dig for the badger so that the mud wouldn't collapse back
on the dog as they had only one thing on their mind--catching the
badger. People actually followed these hunts much in the same way people
follow golf stars during a match.
When that sport passed, as with many breeds, it was thought that the
breed would die out; however, they found the dog to be so good with
children and other pets, the breed expanded all over Great Britain. The
AKC here in the US still only has less that 100 registered, but we are
growing fast. There is a Sealyham club and forums just for them. There
is no one who meets a Sealy without wanting to take them home!
As far as Charlie's favorite games and toys: anything! Affectionate?
Like no other animal.
Normal day? Eat, sleep, and poop; of course, but you had better be ready
for play when he is or you'll get one of those "looks" that you can't
resist. Of course, that Sealy smile is like no other as well. Melts your heart.
Tricks? A few, but you'd better have a treat ready; he's not putting
forth the effort for nothing.
The Sealyham was named after the mansion in Wales owned by the man who
developed the breed, Captain John Edwardes. It is believed that he used
the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, the Cheshire terrier, the Dandie Dinmont, the
Wire Fox terrier, and the West Highland terrier.
If you need a dog, you can't do any better than a Sealyham!
